Dawei is the capital of Tanintharyi Region in the southern part of Myanmar. Dawei is a coastal region covering an area of over4184 sq km. According to the history, it has been an important trading port. Its features some interesting colonial architecture, with many old wooden, thatch-roofed bungalows and some brick and stucco mansions. Dawei is dotted with islands andfamous historical pagodas.
Under British rule Dawei was known as Tavoy. Dawei was first established as Thargaya town some 1200 years ago and the old city is still visible in the north west of present-day Dawei.
The most venerable pagodas are the Shin Motehti Pagoda, Shin Datweh Pagoda and Shin Maw Pagoda on the Dawei Promontory. The Lawka Tharaphu Pagoda features a 74 m tall statue of the reclining Buddha.
One of the prominent place to visit in Dawei is Maungmagan Beach, a well-known beauty spot in the area. As Dawei is in the coastal region, fisheries and marine industries form the mainstay of the local economy.

Mote Latt Thouk (မုန့်လက်သုပ်)
Mote Latt Thouk is a famous Dawei traditional food. Mote Latt Thouk is not a salad, and it is Mote Phat (rice noodles) together with fish soup. You can eat Mote Latt Thouk with Mote Phat and fish soup with chopped onions. It can also be added with Sar Ka Lay Khwey, Chili powder, Bean sprouts, sliced onions and Cilantro in Mote Latt Thouk. People in Dawei eat it as a dessert and sometimes as a breakfast. Some people eat Mote Latt Thouk with rice, fish eggs and fermented clams and some people of the townships eat it with pork. The taste of Mote Latt Thouk is sour because the fish soup includes Pa Ohn Yi. It can be found in every place in Dawei. Fish Cracker (ငါးမုန့်ကြော်)
Fish cracker is kind of snack making up with fish tapioca flour or sago flour and then salt, sugar and MSG as seasonings. You can easily fried a slice of crackers with into the boiling oil. People usually consume with tomato sauce or chili sauce as a snack. Also, sugar cane juice is the best matching for fish crackers.
Dawei Mohinga (ထားဝယ်မုန့်ဟင်းခါး)
Dawei Mohinga is another traditional Dawei famous food. The Dawei Mohinga soup is thicker and has a lot of oil which is unique among other Mohinga and has distinct red color soup. Dawei Mohinga’s the main ingredient is the banana plant. It is cooked with a banana plant peel and slicing the center of the banana plant. The cooking of Dawei Mohinga which includes lemongrass, onions, garlic, ginger, and red chili powder is combined with a lot of oil.
Mote Phat With Pork's Head Salad (ဝက်ခေါင်းသုပ်)
Mote phat with Pork’s head salad is a main dish also popular among local people. They savour it originally or with white rice noodles and other people enjoy it with noodles instead of Mote Phat (rice noodles). Its taste is more sweet and a little spicy and you can eat it with fish soup from the restaurant Mote Latt Thouk. You can get a good matching taste of two local foods of Dawei.
Dawei Sausage(ထားဝယ်ဝက်အူချောင်း)
Sausage can get two townships in Tanintharyi. They are Dawei township and Palaw township. It includes pork, salt, sugar, soy, fish sauce and red powder. Local people who mostly women make sausage. Frstly, they cut as slice, mix ingredients, press into pork’s colon and roast on the fire. The taste is sweet and nutty. It is like most of the people who younger and older people. It takes about one day. It can use as fried, curry and salad with vegetables. All the people who eat pork.
